The staff was unbelievable and well-educated on what they were supposed to do. They were kind and appropriate in every remark and response – they knew their job. They were simply outstanding.

From the time I walked in to the hospital I knew I was in great hands. I received great care from Jan, Marissa and Carla. We are so lucky to have you in Omaha. I was very impressed with the “robot” and Dr. Carlson’s capabilities. He is a doll!

The beauty of a women’s campus is the doctors and staff are sensitive to the specific needs of women. The whole process for me worked like a machine – but I didn’t feel depersonalized.

I just sent another friend to the women’s campus and she had a great experience.

Methodist understands women.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently recognized Methodist Health System for its long-standing commitment to cancer patients through partnership with the Society.

About 30 staff members from ACS and Methodist were on hand at the breakfast meeting. Society Executive Vice President for the High Plains Division, Mike Dany presented the award. During the presentation he remarked about how valuable partnerships like Methodist’s are to the American Cancer Society.

During the event, the American Cancer Society recognized Methodist for the completion of a collaborative research project evaluating the impact of literature on newly diagnosed cancer patients.

The study aims to gain a better understanding of the impact of American Cancer Society materials on newly diagnosed patients. ACS Chief Staff Officer for Health Initiatives, Jay Goodman presented preliminary results on the project.

For years, Methodist has been a partner with ACS by establishing effective strategies to improve the informed decision making and quality of life for newly diagnosed cancer patients, facilitating an early connection for cancer patients to available resources, and by reaching the medically under-served so that barriers to care can be overcome.

In order to ensure that we are providing exceptional patient care and providing a safe environment for our patients, Methodist Health System Imaging participates in Image Wisely and Image Gently.

Imaging tests provide immeasurable health benefits. They find a wide range of diseases in their earliest stages, help doctors make the right diagnosis and allow patients to avoid unnecessary medical procedures. Their benefits far outweigh any risks.

Nonetheless, many imaging procedures – including CT scans, X-rays, mammograms, nuclear medicine tests and fluoroscopy – involve small amounts of radiation that may have an accumulative effect over time.

To minimize any risk to patients, Methodist Imaging uses the lowest dose of radiation possible without affecting our ability to get high quality images.

In order to ensure that we are providing exceptional patient care and providing a safe environment for our patients, Methodist Health System Imaging will become participants in both the Image Wisely and Image Gently, two nationwide initiatives sponsored by the following groups:

American College of Radiology

Radiological Society of North America

American Association of Physicists in Medicine

American Society of Radiologic Technologists

Image Wisely focuses on adult imaging, whereas Image Gently focuses on imaging in children.

To learn more visit:

www.imagewisely.org

www.imagegently.org

The commitment to these programs supports Methodist Health System’s Strategic Initiatives that focus on People and Quality/Safety.

Defining an individual’s communication style and teaching them how to use it effectively will be the focus of the fifth and final session of “Creating Transformation for Your Body, Mind and Spirit,” a unique series offered by Methodist Women’s Hospital and the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN).

Scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, from 6 – 8 p.m., the session will be held in the second floor conference center of the Methodist Women’s Center (717 N. 190th Plaza), adjacent to Methodist Women’s Hospital.

Karen Baldwin, an experienced program leader for ICAN, will guide participants through a discussion on empowered communication and help them identify their communication style.

“Empowered communication means feeling confident and free to express thoughts and ideas to others in an effective, win-win manner,” Baldwin said. “Participants will learn about four different communication styles and will self-identify which style they use most frequently. Attendees will discuss and model what style is most effective when communicating with others.”

Attendees will also hear and discuss the use of their authentic voice when communicating professionally and on a personal level.

“The term authentic voice means using your real and passionate voice for the good of all,” Baldwin said. “Participants will gain the understanding that when we slip into non-productive modes of communication, there are negative effects on self and others.”

Attendees can register at www.icanglobal.net/methodist, or call (402) 392-0746. Registration cost is $25.

ICAN, established in 1981, is a non-profit organization offering transformational leadership programs and experiences for individuals and companies that value innovation and collaboration. ICAN’s annual leadership conference attracts 1,800 women from across the country and profiles internationally renowned educators, authors and world leaders.

A strong belief in the empowerment of women was just one of many qualities that earned Methodist Health System CEO John M. Fraser the Tim Rouse Award for Women in Leadership, announced April 4 at the 2012 ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference.

Fraser joined Methodist Health System (MHS) as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Methodist Hospital in 1991. He was named president and CEO of the hospital in 1997, a position he held until 2007 when he was appointed president and CEO of Methodist Health System.

“What makes this honor special is the fact I was nominated by strong women leaders within our organization,” Fraser said of receiving the award. “Those women are appreciative of the opportunities they have been given to evolve as leaders within our health system.”

Under Fraser’s tenure, nine women hold vice president positions within the organization. Josie Abboud, vice president, ancillary and professional services; Teri Tipton, vice president and chief nursing officer, patient care services; Sue Korth, vice president and chief operating officer, Methodist Women’s Hospital; Holly Huerter, vice president, human resources; Linda Burt, vice president and chief financial officer, finance; Sara Juster, vice president, compliance; Cyndy Peacock, chief executive officer, Methodist Hospital Foundation; Peg Helget, vice president, patient services at Jennie Edmundson Hospital; and Donna Hubbell, vice president, performance improvement and patient safety at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

In the nomination Fraser was cited for the way he values women and his ongoing effort to recognize women for work well done.

“John would tell you that his success in business and his personal life is largely due to the talent of women,” the nomination said. “His high attention to recognizing women for service, accomplishments, education, a job well done, extra efforts and more, role models his belief that women have strength and talents, and the utilization of such, results in success.”

Fraser believes advancing women in the workforce simply comes down to a fundamental management style.

“Building female leaders is a result of basic, good management,” Fraser said. “To me that means being open-minded, while working to mentor and develop promising staff of either gender. Those basic principles need to be set as the cultural priority of the organization.”

The Tim Rouse Award honors male leaders in the Omaha community who embody and support the advancement of women. The award was created in 2005 to honor Tim Rouse, co-creator of the Influence and Focus program, and co-founder of FGI International and FGISpirit. The annual award is sponsored by Lincoln Financial Group.

I will always be grateful of the care I received from those great nurses and nurse practitioner, but am thoroughly impressed with your system.
